World Badminton News Today - Indonesia Open Super Series 2012
Indian badminton ace Saina Nehwal defeated China's Li Xuerui to win the Indonesia Open Super Series in Jakarta on Sunday, sending out a strong message to rivals ahead of the London Olympics next month.
The world number five took the women's singles crown and $48,750 in prize money by beating world number four Li from a set down 13-21, 22-20, 21-19.
Nehwal said winning her third Indonesia Open title was "special" and hoped for more success in the country. She won the tournament in 2009 and 2010 but lost the following year to China's Wang Yihan.
Indonesia’s Simon Santoso defeated Du Pengyu of China 21-18, 13-21, 21-11 to win the men’s singles title at the Djarum Indonesia Open Superseries Premier 2012 badminton tournament on Sunday.
The win, Indonesia’s first in the tournament since 2008, provides a much-needed boost ahead of the London Olympics.
No Indonesian shuttler has won any of the Open’s titles since 2008, when Sony Dwi Kuncoro was victorious in men’s singles and Vita Marissa and Liliyana Natsir in women’s doubles.
This is also the first victory this year for the 26-year-old seventh-seed.
The world’s top two men’s singles players, Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei and China’s Lin Dan, did not participate in this year’s Open. Lee, the three-time defending champion, is nursing an ankle injury, and Lin gave no reason for his absence.
In the mixed doubles category, Indonesians Ahmad Tantowi and Liliyana fell 21-17, 17-21, 21-13 to Thailand’s Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thoungthongkam.
Indonesia’s men’s doubles bet, Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan, failed to reach the final round after being defeated by South Korea’s Jung Jae Sung and Lee Yong Dae 21-14, 17-21, 15-21.
The prominent tournament, with total prize money of $650,000, took place from June 12 to June 17.
