World number one Chong Wei eases through
BIRMINGHAM: World number one Lee Chong Wei eased into the second round of the All England badminton championships on Wednesday with a 21-15, 21-16 victory over unseeded Indian Chetan Anand.
The Malaysian, top seeded after winning the first two Super Series tournaments this year, needed just 26 minutes to see off his first round opponent.
But there was an early scare for ex-Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat, the fourth seed. The Indonesian dropped the first game before edging out Hong Kong's Hu Yun 17-21, 21-11, 21-12.
Denmark's eight-seeded Jan Jorgensen became the first noted casualty, losing 21-16, 21-10 to unseeded Chinese Chen Long.
Chen's compatriot Lin Dan, the world and Olympic champion, was due in action late on Wednesday against Danish qualifier Christian Lind Thomsen. Lin is making a belated seasonal debut with a busy year ahead.
The All Englands, sometimes dubbed the Wimbledon of badminton, are celebrating their 100th staging this year.
